Bring Back Your Joy For Life!

Three Step Wellness Approach

In this article I want to expand on the Wellness Model and talk about the three step approach that was instrumental in turning my life around several years ago and later saw me through a traumatic year.

1. Live Consciously – Awareness Creates Choice

Sometimes life feels a bit like being swept up in a tidal wave of events. We can do nothing but bob along amid the debris clutching desperately to anything that floats by. Living Consciously is about putting yourself on the side of CAUSE rather than EFFECT. When you are on the side of cause you decide that you have control over how you think, feel and respond in any given situation. The process requires AWARENESS: of what is going on around you, and what is going on inside you. Objective Self-Awareness is where most of us come unstuck and that is why I love teaching Meditation and Mindfulness as tools to open the door to Self-Awareness.

The next part of Living Consciously is that once you are aware, you need to take responsibility for the outcomes in your life. Outcomes are the result of how you either React or Respond in any given situation.

The third step to Living Consciously is that you take meaningful action to support yourself and others in a win-win fashion.

2. Find Meaning in the NOW

Most of the time our thoughts and feelings are in the past (depression/ sadness) or in the future (fear/anxiety). In reality, the only moment in time you have to feel and experience anything is this moment right now. By bringing your thoughts into the NOW you can break the cycle of stressful thinking and begin to notice the beauty of small things and find meaning in the present moment. This small thing requires practice yet it is a powerful tool to change how you think, feel and act. Finding meaning is most important when things are not going well. There is an opportunity to find meaning in every thing that happens whether it is good or bad. If you are Living Consciously you will have the awareness and skills to look around and find the meaning hidden in even the worst of situations.

3. Make Self-Care a Priority

Self-Care is first thing that goes on the back burner when you are busy and stressed. When you do this you are sending a message that says; I don’t matter, my well-being is not important.

Self-Care is more than just making sure you brush your teeth each day. Self-Care includes your thoughts, beliefs and actions across a range of areas. This is not about being selfish or indulgent; self-care is a process of creating a better YOU capable of better things including contribution to your community and the world.
When it comes to Wellness the beautiful words of Elanor Brownn say it all: “Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.”
