Bring Back Your Joy For Life!

Living Consciously

Living Consciously means creating a state of awareness internally, externally and on the interaction between the two. It is about generating a sense of deliberateness and creating an intention for your life.

More than just deciding how you want to feel, intention is about knowing how you want to respond when life ‘happens’…because it does you know! Life is a dichotomy full of ups and downs, heat and cold, happy and sad, each needing the other to exist. Remove the valley and the mountain becomes a plain.

Thinking from this perspective allows you to see and accept that there will always be less than perfect moments in life. It is how you choose to think and respond at the time that really makes the difference. When it comes to your health and wellness it’s the difference that makes the difference!

This comment from Quentin Regestein sums it up nicely:

"The... patient should be made to understand that he or she must take charge of his own life. Don't take your body to the doctor as if he were a repair shop.”

There are three ways that living consciously can work;

1. Retrospectively.
This is simple hindsight. Looking back over an event and learning what you need. How did it impact you? What could you have done differently that might have given you a better outcome. This understanding is then applied to similar events in the future. This is probably the easiest and most common method.

2. As it happens
Rather than wait for hindsight, this method requires you to observe an event as it is happening. In your observation notice what is happening and how it impacts you and others. Decide how you want to feel and what you need to do to achieve this.

3. In the future
This scenario happens when you are able to look ahead at something you know is coming, understand what you what to achieve and act in advance. Ideally you will be able to avoid having to go through any discomfort at all!

In all situations, Living Consciously requires Self-Awareness and the best way to generate this is through practices that make you aware of your thinking, feeling and doing patterns. Meditation and especially Mindfulness are two excellent tools for this. For many, working with a coach - that second pair of objective eyes and ears, can help you to observe and put some of those patterns into perspective.

Ultimately, making a decision to Live Consciously gives you control over how you think, feel and act no matter what the circumstance. It is an approach that leads to better outcomes in life and for your health!

Learning how to consciously manage your thoughts, feelings and actions is like learning to sail a boat. As Louisa May Alcott said in my favourite quote:

 "I am not afraid of storms for I am learning to sail my ship"
